Mamma Roma is a prostitute who dreams of a different future for herself and for her son Ettore, who has just returned to live with her in the Roman outskirts. Caught between petty-bourgeois aspirations and a reality that allows no redemption, her attempt at social advancement clashes with the moral and social violence of the context. Pasolini stages a modern, intense, and merciless tragedy, where maternal love becomes both a desperate force and a condemnation, and Rome reveals itself as a cruel theatre of shattered illusions.
