José Angelino and Simone Pappalardo, “
POP”

16 april 2026 ore 19:00
Performance

POP belongs to a series of open compositions and sound performances born from the collaboration between artist and physicist José Angelino and electroacoustic composer Simone Pappalardo. The sound performance is based on a concept of transformation, in which the seemingly random and disordered sound of popping popcorn is processed in real time into a uniform and structured sonic flow. This process explores the transition from an inherently unpredictable and dispersive phenomenon to composition and harmony.

The event will take place in the first-floor room dedicated to UNAROMA LIVE.

Free admission until capacity is reached.

From 17 to 22 April, a trace of the intervention carried out by José Angelino and Simone Pappalardo will remain on view in the exhibition space.

JOSÉ ANGELINO (Ragusa, 1977) lives and works in Rome. He holds a degree in Physics and began exhibiting his work in 2011, following a period of independent research. His practice primarily takes the form of installations combining light, sound, and materials such as glass, creating perceptual environments in constant transformation. His work investigates the relationships between natural phenomena, physical forces, and living systems, exploring the balance between individuality and coexistence while making visible the hidden structures and dynamics of reality. In 2013 he received the Visual Arts Prize of the Fondazione Toti Scialoja, and in 2016 the Arte Fiera 40 Prize. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and projects, including Manifesta 13 (Marseille, 2020), and has exhibited at institutions such as the American Academy in Rome and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome.

SIMONE PAPPALARDO (Reggio Emilia, 1976) SIMONE PAPPALARDO is an electroacoustic composer and performer whose research originates from timbre, exploring the physical processes that generate it through electronic lutherie instruments, interactive performances, and sound art installations. The role of technology, often designed and built by the artist himself, is also examined from a socio-cultural perspective. In his performances, he employs original instruments and algorithms, developing sonic systems that bring into relation matter, energy, and perception. Among his projects, in 2019 he created, together with physicist and artist José Angelino, the automated orchestra MILLIS(), composed of instruments built from low-cost and recycled materials and inspired by models derived from ecosystem studies. The work has been presented at international festivals and contemporary art museums and is referenced in the volume Circuiti del tempo by Agostino Di Scipio. He has been artist-in-residence at Mattatoio – Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome (2021–2023), the Goethe-Institut, Berlin (2017), and the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte, Montepulciano (2024–2025). In 2016 he received the Media Art Festival Award at MAXXI, Rome, and in 2008 a special mention at the Italian National Arts Prize.
