2019

Jenna Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living media, such as Bacillus subtilis nattō bacteria and the “many-headed” slime mold Physarum polycephalum. Her audiovisual pieces, sculptures, and performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology.

A record made using AI as a medium to channel messages from Bacillus subtilis natto, an extremophilic, probiotic bacterium and possible Martian. Inspired by Theodore Flournoy’s notes of Helene Smith’s Martian trance language in From India to Planet Mars (1900). Machine Learning by Memo Akten and Damien Henry.

As part of IL PIANETA COME FESTIVAL XL Vol. 1 which is organised together with Terraforma Festival, MACRO unveils a permanent billboard and sound installation by Finnish artist Jenna Sutela which is situated on the MACRO terrace and reinterprets the work of Ettore Sottsass.
