The video by Beatrice Marchi Story of a Girl Band (2018) narrates a group of characters who meet in passing on the moving walkways of an airport and are transformed into a girl band in the spotlight on a red carpet. The figures are not new, they are recurring protagonists in the artist’s research. Hybrid in their being, without a predefined identity, they are both human and animal, young and old, man and woman. It is the first time they meet, in a few lightning-fast moments they find themselves gathered on a red carpet, dazzled by photographers’ flashes. A song in the background, sung by male voices in falsetto attempting to alter their timbre, reads:

BEATRICE MARCHI (Gallarate, 1986) lives in Berlin. Her work investigates processes involved in the definition of identity, creating ambivalent characters inspired by the figure of the clown, which comes to life in paintings, video animations, performances and sculptures. She has had solo shows at: Sandy Brown, Berlin (2020); Casa Masaccio Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea, San Giovanni Valdarno (2019); Riverside, Bern (2018). Her work has been shown at numerous institutions, including: Museion, Bozen (2019); Performance Space, New York (2019); Palazzo Reale, Milan (2019); Mambo, Bologna (2018); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2018); Galerias Municipais de Lisboa (Boavista), Lisbon (2017).
