Diego Gualandris joins the RETROFUTURE section, the collection of works by young Italian artists growing organically with time.

Paola is a mobile device for changing light and visual perception that can be worn and activated by the audience or remain static and be observed from outside as a sculpture.

DIEGO GUALANDRIS (Albino, 1993) lives and works in Rome. Diego Gualandris’ painting is inspired by iconographic references drawn from vernacular culture, folk tales and practices linked to pagan beliefs. His canvases, often large in format, incorporate monstrous animals, fantastic scenarios and almost unrecognisable human beings. The subjects are represented through layered veils of colour that conceal a direct reading of the scene, amplifying and deforming the experience of the painting as a vision or omen. Recent exhibitions include: Escape from Regina Coeli, ADA, Rome; Fuente Perversa, N.A.S.A.L., Mexico City; Viveros, Instituto Italiano de Cultura, Mexico City, 2022; Giardino all’italiana, Match Gallery, Ljublijana, 2022; Those Winged Words, Fondazione Giuliani, Rome, 2021; Pazzo Palazzo, Palazzo Monti, Brescia, 2021; Italian Twist, Fondazione Imago Mundi, Treviso, 2021; Melme, Sonnenstube, Lugano, 2021; FUORI, Quadriennale d’arte 2020, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, 2020; Caradrio, Tile Project Space, Milan, 2018.  He has been artist in residence at: Castro Projects, Rome; Palazzo Monti, Brescia; Residenza la Fornace, Spino d’Adda, VIR- Viafarini, Milan. In 2020 he won the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, New York.
