Camouflage Milieux

Jim C. Nedd joins the RETROFUTURE section, the collection of works by young Italian artists which grows organically with time.

Camouflage Milieux is based on a binary set, above and beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea. The landscape appears as a «cleansing fresh coat of paint. A white wash that hides the old stain and tainted world underneath.» (Continental Drift, Russel Banks, Harper & Row 1985).

This photograph was taken in a coastal district named Rosignano, but later changed its name to Rosignano Solvay after the soda ash factory Solvay settled there in 1914. Since then, the factory has been dumping a critical amount of white bleaching rivers into the sea, therefore whitening and contaminating the environment permanently. «I first heard of this place because after the 2008 world financial crisis many swimwear brands chose to shoot advertisements there, as a low budget topical paradise under the unofficial name Caraibi Toscani (Tuscan Caribbean). This work is particularly important to me as it comes at a time that generates questions and concerns about the western made definition of paradise and its color palette.»
