IL PIANETA XL – VOL. 3
A project by MACRO and Terraforma
With Bill Kouligas, Crystallmess, Heith, Honour, Katja Novitskova, Low Jack x Le Diouck

4 March 2023, from 7 pm to 4 am
#Supplement

IL PIANETA XL, the event created by MACRO in collaboration with Terraforma to experiment with the encounter between artistic and sound languages within museum architecture, is back. Now in its third year, the project will develop, over the course of one night, a new path that will bring club culture into the spaces of the museum, starting from the terrace and then gathering around the stage set up in the foyer. This fusion of transforming worlds and imagery, and mutual contamination, comes to life by celebrating 15 years of one of the most emblematic realities of the evolution of sound production and sound-based art practices: the multidisciplinary record label and artist platform PAN, founded in Berlin by Bill Kouligas.

IL PIANETA XL pays homage to the visionary project Il Pianeta come Festival that Ettore Sottsass published in Casabella in 1972, developing both through the fields of research that distinguish Terraforma, namely sound language, architecture and environmental sustainability, and within the experimental spaces and directions of Museum for Preventive Imagination.

BILL KOULIGAS is an artist, designer and musician based in Berlin. He is known as the founder and artistic director of the multidisciplinary platform and record label PAN, which has hosted artists such as Pan Daijing, Pelada, Anne Imhof, Puce Mary, Amnesia Scanner, Lucy Railton and Yves Tumor. In his artistic practice Kouligas draws inspiration from diverse sources, traditions, and various subcultures. By interpreting them and relates them to contemporary life and in a evolving experimentation creates multidimensional works through sound, visual and performance. Under several aliases, Kouligas has produced, composed and released electronic music for nearly 15 years to date, and performed in venues such as London’s ICA, MoMA PS1, Volksbühne Berlin, Kammerspiele Munich, V&A Museum London, as well as at global festivals and club institutions (Berghain, Mutek, Unsound, Transmediale, CTM to name but a few). Throughout his work, he has collaborated with artists such as Harm van den Dorpel, Seth Price, Paweł Althamer, Spiros Hadjidjanos, Amnesia Scanner, Mat Dryhurst and Nora Khan, among others. His solo work and as well as his vision with the label shows a remarkable ability in pushing the boundaries of musical genres to undiscovered territories.

CRYSTALLMESS is Christelle Oyiri, a French born Ivoirian/Guadeloupean producer, DJ, writer and artist based in Paris. Her unique production style combines melodic techno, afro-trance and abrasive dancehall. The NTS resident and SHAPE alumnus has released her stunning debut EP Mere Noises in 2018, a split EP on PAN Records followed in 2019.
Crystallmess’ approach to production, DJing and performance combines radical energy and fantasmatic afrofuturism. Her polyrhythmic and eclectic DJ style brings an uncompromising, globalized and diasporic approach to techno and club music in general.
As well as performing in some of Europe’s leading clubs and festivals, she has created sound designs for fashion houses such as Kenzo or Paco Rabanne.

HEITH is the alias of Daniele Guerrini, an artist and musician based in Milan. During recent years he investigated sound in different directions, from rave music to ambient and electroacoustic, also incorporating the influence of different instances of traditional folk music and ritual music with a particular focus on the most ineffable languages, mysticism and science fiction speculations. A large use of sound design combined with several acoustic instruments and disorientating rhythms makes his music a unique combination of genres and styles in a contemporary ritualistic form. He is the founder of the experimental music label Haunter Records, one of the main reference points for underground electronic music in Italy since 2013, and formerly was a curator of Milan’s space, Macao. In October 2022 the LP X, wheel, his accomplished artistic statement to date, was released by PAN with the live AV show ft. drummer Jacopo Battaglia (of the band ZU), guitarist Leonardo Rubboli, and visual studio DECLINO, premiering at Unsound to much acclaim.

“There’s not much we can say about HONOUR that makes complete sense. They may or may not have grown up in the US, making beats with a cousin who sang in a church band; they might have toured as a roadie with platinum-selling R&B outfit Pretty Ricky before acing regional videogame tournaments and moving to NYC; they could have sold their life story to children’s book author C.S. Adler and signed to Violator management; maybe they ended up stationed in London, working as a runner on music promos. But however plausible it is, the breadcrumb trail provides us with a detailed cultural framework for Beg 4 Mercy, a dense fog of pop and underground references that’s as inescapable as it is enticing. It’s a rare debut that engulfs even the most cautious listener, sweeping through tongue-in-cheek Wild West bravado and psychedelic, overdriven club rap, bifurcating into crumbly DIY noise and vaporous euphoric soul. Sometimes barbed and cynical, but just as often deliriously warm-hearted, it’s a record of contradictions that’s as puzzling to unpick as the artist’s baffling backstory, imprinted with more hidden messages than a Renaissance painting. Who needs to play identity bingo when the art’s screaming so loudly?”

KATJA NOVITSKOVA (1984, Tallinn) is a contemporary artist who lives and works between Amsterdam and Berlin. Novitskova interrogates the positions and locations where the technological and physical coincide, understanding them as two facets of the same ideological continuum. Blurring distinctions between media, she is interested in the interpretation and perception of visual material and works with digital collages, sculptures and installations. Katja Novitskova released Post Internet Survival Guide in 2010, an exploration into the creation and distribution of art online in that year. It is both the artist’s publication and an installation. In the foreword to the book, asserts that « the notion of a survival guide arises as an answer to a basic human need to cope with increasing complexity» describes it as an essential tool that addresses the space «where we ask ourselves what it means to be a human today».
Her work has been exhibited around the world in various institutions like Estonian pavilion at Venice Biennale; Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene; Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin; CC Foundation in Shanghai and many more.

LOW JACK (1985, Tegucigalpa) is Philippe Hallais, a French electronic music artist born in 1985 in Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and currently living in Paris, where he operates Editions Gravats / Les Disques De La Bretagne with Jean Carval. He is known for his distinct club constructions, fluidly stepping between dancehall, sound art and techno territories. He has published three albums under the pseudonym Low Jack (Garifuna Variations, L.I.E.S, 2014; Sewing Machine, In Paradisum, 2015; Lighthouse Stories, Modern Love, 2016) and one under his own name, An American Hero (Modern Love, 2017). Since 2017, Hallais is a member and active contributor of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement with Dominick Fernow (Hospital Productions). In March 2018, he has released the publicly acclaimed mini-LP Riddims du Lieu- dit on his own label Editions Gravats, described as an «absolutely killer set of mutant dancehall futurism from the bassbins of Brittany»

LE DIOUCK born as Magueye Diouck, is a young French Artist. His unique style and hybrid music are now his trademark that took inspiration from his senegaleses roots and his Parisian lifestyle.
He started to make music in 2019 with the DJ Bamaoyende, they dropped their first project called 55 degrees in March 2020. Lediouck and Bamaoyende decided the same year to create a new group with Dourane Fall called Nyokô Bokbaê, they will drop few songs until the main project where they will collaborate with their friend Rad Cartier for Summer 2020. Supported by Lala &ce, he is focus on his music and trying to reach new standards by collaborating with artist like Crystal Murray or Low Jack. His music is intense, full of rhythm and always pushing the boundaries: has no gender, he can be Rock then moving to afro or something more rap. That’s why brands like Gucci, Off White, Kenzo or Casablanca wanted to work with him.
Today, he signed in the Label&ce Recless founded by Lala&ce, he will drop his first project called Gr&ce Joke before summer 2023.
